Lesson 2 — Israel in the Days of Jesus
Opening Question
If you are a star athlete on the pitch, but you go home and your parents ask you to take out the rubbish, does doing that chore make you "less" of an athlete? Or are you simply choosing a different role for a moment?
Core Truth
Jesus stepped into a messy, rule-obsessed world not to give us more religion, but to bring us Life. He laid aside His divine "powers" to show us how to live a victorious life through a real relationship with the Father.
The "Glass of Water" Principle
People often get confused because Jesus said, "I and My Father are one" (John 10:30), but also said, "My Father is greater than I" (John 14:28). How can both be true? Think of a glass of water taken from a massive lake:
- Identity: The water in the glass is 100% "Lake Water." Under a microscope, it is identical to the lake.
- Ministry / Role: The water in the glass is limited by the glass. It does not have the same mass or depth as the whole lake — but it has a specific purpose: to be used, to be given.
Jesus is the "Lake" (God) who stepped into the "Glass" (Humanity). In His identity, He and the Father are one. In His ministry (His role on earth to save us), He submitted to the Father. Both are true!
The World Jesus Entered
Jesus did not step into the peaceful world of the Old Testament. Following 400 "silent" years with no prophets, He stepped into a world of:
- Political Oppression: Rome ruled everything. Soldiers could force a Jewish person to carry their heavy gear for a mile at any time.
- Corrupt Tax Collectors: "Publicans" were Jewish people working for Rome, stealing from their own neighbours to get rich.
- Religious Confusion: The Pharisees (legalists obsessed with rules) and Sadducees (materialists who denied miracles) had turned faith into a heavy, impossible burden of man-made traditions.
The Zacchaeus Effect
Into this mess, Jesus walked — and brought Life. Not more rules. The story of Zacchaeus shows this perfectly. Zacchaeus was a corrupt, hated tax collector. But one encounter with the love and presence of Jesus instantly changed him. Zacchaeus immediately gave away half his wealth and repaid fourfold what he had stolen. That is what Life does. That is what religious rules can never do.
Two Trees — Two Ways of Living
The Pharisees, Sadducees, and other religious sects all had one thing in common: they were living in the "Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil." They were obsessed with figuring out: Is this a sin? Is that a sin? We have the truth; you don't.
Jesus came to bring us back to the "Tree of Life." Life is not about having the perfect doctrinal arguments or pointing out everyone else's flaws. It is about knowing Him. A real, walking, talking fellowship with Jesus changes people far more quickly than debating rules.
▶ Truth Card
Core Truth
Jesus is fully God, but He became a man to show me how to live in fellowship with the Spirit.
Action Point
I will spend 5 minutes each day this week simply talking to Jesus like a friend — not a formal, religious prayer, just a real conversation.

Group Discussion
- Why is it important to know that Jesus "emptied Himself" and lived as a man? How does that give us a pattern for our own lives?
- Zacchaeus was a hated tax collector, but one encounter with Jesus changed him instantly. Who is someone in your life that seems "too far gone" for God to reach? How does this story challenge that view?
- The religious leaders added so many rules that people were crushed under the weight of them. Do you ever feel like "being a Christian" is just a list of rules? How does real fellowship with Jesus change that?
- Think about the "Two Trees". Are you spending more time judging what is "right and wrong" (Knowledge) or spending time simply connecting with Jesus (Life)?
