Lesson 1 — The Virgin Birth and His Divinity

Opening Question

Have you ever worked incredibly hard on a project, a piece of art, or a game level — only for someone to walk in, use it, and completely ignore the fact that you were the one who built it? How did that feel?

Core Truth

Jesus is not just a character in a story. He is the Word of God made flesh — the Creator and Sustainer of every atom in your body. To know Him is to understand the very purpose of your existence.

The Reality of Jesus

Imagine the architect of your school walking through the hallways. Students are leaning against the walls he designed, sitting in the chairs he chose, breathing the air handled by the system he engineered — yet no one recognises him. This is exactly what happened when Jesus entered the world.

Why Study Jesus?

Studying the life of Jesus is not just "religious history". If He is the one holding your life together, then the more you know Him, the more clearly you will think, the better you will see the world, and the more your heart will be transformed. What you do not know about Jesus will always be a roadblock for you.

The greater the revelation you have of Jesus — of His goodness, His love, His power — the greater your walk with God will be. You never know which truth will be the one that changes your life.

The Virgin Birth: Why It Matters

For Jesus to save us, He could not simply be "another good man". He had to be sinless. The whole foundation of Christianity rests on two truths: Christ was born of a virgin without sin, and He was raised from the dead. Here is why the virgin birth matters to you:

The Seed Principle

Jesus called Himself a seed. He came full of grace and truth. Grace is a provision for every need you have. Truth sets you free. Everything required to multiply life, healing, and victory was packed into the Seed called Jesus. When that Seed is planted in our lives, we become the harvest.

He Emptied Himself

Jesus is God, from everlasting. But because He loves us, He "emptied Himself" (Philippians 2). He left glory. He laid aside His "omni" powers (knowing everything, being everywhere, having all power) to become a man. He was limited just like us, but He lived a sinless life empowered by the Holy Spirit to show us how to live in victory.

Core Truth

Jesus is the Creator who holds my very life together by the word of His power.

Action Point

This week, when I feel overwhelmed, I will stop and declare: "Jesus, You are upholding my life right now by the power of Your Word."

Jesus, appointed heir of all things Hebrews 1:1–3 — "God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high."
The Creator Unrecognised John 1:10–11 — "He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him."
The Word Became Flesh John 1:14 — "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
The Sign of Immanuel Isaiah 7:14 — "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."
The Exalted Name Philippians 2:9–11 — "Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Group Discussion

  1. If Jesus is currently "upholding all things by the word of His power" — including your own life — how does that change the way you think about your bad days or anxieties?
  2. Why do you think people find it hard to believe Jesus is God in the flesh? What "roadblocks" does that create in their lives?
  3. Mary's response to the angel was, "Let it be to me according to your word." What is one area of your life where you need to stop arguing with God and simply agree with His Word?
  4. How does knowing that Jesus "shared in flesh and blood" make Him more relatable to you when you face temptation or struggle?
